What is BiomeTI?
BiomeTI is an initiative of Hannover-based university professors, all engaged in collaborative research in the field of biomedical engineering. It aims – in conjunction with structural development funds, industrial companies and financiers, and supported by the Lower Saxony state government – to foster research in biomedical technology in Hannover and to consolidate it within a single centre to serve as a flagship project.
As a registered association, BiomeTI e.V. brings together the plans and interests of the various scientific working groups, pursuing the academic principle of the unity of research and teaching. The scientific excellence of these groups involved in research forms the main basis for professional technology transfer – a transfer that can build on this foundation, as scientific projects are translated into marketable products, yielding the investor a return on investment. This may be accomplished by successively establishing suitable management structures that fit hand-in-glove with the scientific infrastructure of biomedical engineering.
Thanks to Hannover’s unique locational advantages, BiomeTI succeeds in representing the entire value chain: from the initial idea to the scientific outcome and, in turn, to the product and its real-life testing in clinical situations.
As a physical centre, BiomeTI has the potential to become Germany’s outstanding research-and-industry focal point for biomedical engineering and innovation. As a scientific organization, BiomeTI is primarily a research centre but also a project developer, seed capitalist, incubator and agency all in one, enabling it to overcome the problems encountered at the interface between the previous German-wide technology transfer initiatives.
Modelling itself on successful US- and British-based institutions, BiomeTI consistently pursues a value chain approach.
